Devotional: Letting God Hold the Pen
Letting God Hold the Pen
Scripture:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
— Proverbs 3:5–6
We all wake up already telling a story.
Before we even step out of bed, there’s a narrator in our head working overtime:
“This day is going to be stressful.”
“I’m behind.”
“No one understands me.”
“I’ve got to fix everything myself.”
“This will never change.”
And without even realizing it, we start living according to that script—one we didn’t ask for, didn’t pray over, and didn’t consult God about.
It’s a story shaped by old fears, old wounds, old habits of thinking.
But Scripture shows us something radically different:
We are not meant to be the sole authors of our lives.
We are meant to be co-authors with God—
and ultimately, to let Him hold the pen.
Here’s the mystery:
God doesn’t force His way into our story.
He waits for permission.
He waits for surrender, not strength.
So how do we actually let Him author our lives?
We start with the smallest shifts.
Let God be the one who names the moment.
We rush to label things:
“This is bad.”
“This is hopeless.”
“I messed everything up.”
But God names things differently.
Sometimes what feels like loss is actually pruning.
Sometimes what feels like delay is preparation.
Before reacting, pause and ask:
“Lord, what do You call this?”
Stop forcing the plot.
When we feel fear, we push harder.
When we feel uncertainty, we scramble for clarity.
When life slows down, we panic.
But God is patient.
He is not rushed, and He is not behind.
Pray:
“Not my pace. Write this Your way.”
Peace starts right there.
Allow divine interruptions.
Every major story in Scripture began with God interrupting someone’s normal:
Moses was tending sheep.
Mary was just living her life.
Peter was mending nets.
God broke in and everything changed.
Invite Him to do the same:
“Lord, interrupt me if You want to.”
Let Scripture narrate your day.
Instead of letting fear or shame be your inner voice, choose one verse each morning as your “guiding line.”
Today it might be:
“The Lord is my shepherd.”
Or:
“My grace is sufficient for you.”
Let God’s Word speak louder than the old narrator.
Surrender the ending.
We grasp for outcomes because we think we need to guarantee our own safety or significance.
But surrendering the ending allows God to write a better middle.
Pray:
“I don’t need to know the ending.
I just need to know You’re in this chapter.”
And He is.
A Simple Daily Prayer
“Write Your story in me today, Lord.
Erase what doesn’t belong.
Highlight what You love.
Give me the courage to live the next line You give.”
Amen.
